Climate Change Mitigation & Resilience

Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience

Climate change is no longer a distant concern for the communities living on Bussi Island and the surrounding Lake Victoria islands, it is a daily reality. Rising water levels, unpredictable rainfall, declining fish stocks, and degraded soils threaten the livelihoods of families who already live on the margins. For many households, a single failed season or a sudden climate shock can mean hunger, displacement, or the loss of their only source of income.

RAHI’s Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience program exists to protect these vulnerable communities from the growing impacts of environmental change. We help families adopt sustainable practices that safeguard their food security, restore degraded ecosystems, and create reliable sources of income even in the face of climate instability. Through climate-smart agriculture, responsible aquaculture, and environmental conservation efforts, we are building the capacity of communities to adapt, recover, and thrive.

But resilience is more than techniques, it is dignity, stability, and hope. By empowering local households with practical skills, knowledge, and community-led action, RAHI ensures that families are not left behind as the climate shifts around them. The people of these islands have the strength to adapt; they only need the opportunity and support to do so.
