Livelihoods & Women’s Empowerment

Livelihoods and Women’s Empowerment

On the islands of Lake Victoria, poverty and limited economic opportunity create daily challenges for families especially women. Many mothers struggle to provide for their households, not because they lack skill or determination, but because they lack access to the tools, knowledge, and opportunities that could transform their lives. With few income sources and unpredictable natural conditions, families are often caught in cycles of dependency and vulnerability.

RAHI’s Livelihoods & Women’s Empowerment program is changing this narrative by giving women the chance to build sustainable, dignified sources of income. We equip them with practical skills, provide hands-on training, and support them to start small enterprises that can grow and support their families. Whether through aquaculture, mushroom growing, tailoring, soap production, or cooperative ventures, women gain the confidence and capacity to create their own path to stability.

When a woman earns an income, everything changes. Children stay in school, families eat better, households become safer, and communities grow stronger. Empowered women become leaders, shaping the future of their homes, organising community groups, and inspiring others to rise with them.
