Transforming Lives through Sustainable Livelihoods: RAHI's Partnership with Makerere University

At Rachi Action for Healthcare Initiatives (RAHI), we believe in empowering communities to break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic autonomy. In collaboration with Makerere University, we are proud to launch a transformative livelihood project focusing on aquaculture, agriculture, and animal husbandry to uplift underserved rural populations.

Why This Project Matters

The communities along the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater lake in Africa, have long depended on fishing as their primary source of income and sustenance. However, recent government restrictions on unsustainable fishing practices have left many without a livelihood, plunging them into poverty. This project aims to equip these communities with alternative, sustainable methods to generate income while promoting environmental conservation.

Our Objectives

Through this initiative, RAHI seeks to:

  1. Promote Sustainable Aquaculture: We are introducing fish cage farming and pond systems to diversify income sources and address declining fish stocks in Lake Victoria.
  2. Enhance Agricultural Practices: By teaching modern, high-yield agricultural methods, we aim to boost food security and income generation.
  3. Strengthen Animal Husbandry: Training in livestock rearing will provide additional opportunities for families to improve their livelihoods.

How We Will Achieve This

Demonstration Sites: Establishing training hubs with fish cage farms, aquaculture ponds, and model agricultural and livestock projects to equip community members with hands-on skills.

Training Trainers: Developing a network of local trainers who will cascade their knowledge to farmers and fishermen across the region.

Engagement with Government Agencies: Collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries to provide technical support and ensure alignment with national priorities.

Access to Expertise: Leveraging our affiliation with Makerere University to recruit aquaculture and agricultural specialists and foster innovation through research and education.

Our Vision for Impact

By empowering rural communities with these sustainable livelihood options, we envision:

Increased Income Generation: Providing families with new skills and tools to support themselves.

Economic Autonomy: Enabling individuals to take charge of their financial futures.

Environmental Stewardship: Promoting responsible resource management to preserve the ecosystem of Lake Victoria.

A Collaborative Effort

RAHI’s diverse team of experts includes academics, social scientists, medical professionals, and local leaders, all committed to uplifting marginalized communities. With the support of partners like Makerere University and local government leaders, as well as international collaborators such as the UK Fund for Charities, we are building a robust platform for sustainable development.
